Muda withdraws from unity govt to become ‘third force’

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 10): The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) is pulling its support for the unity government in protest against the withdrawal of all 47 charges faced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In a social media post on Sunday, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the party has decided to become a “third force” opposition following the discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) for Zahid in relation to the charges of criminal breach of trust, graft and money laundering.

“This is the start of the normalisation of corruption. We cannot and will not tolerate this unprincipled move,” he added.

A DNAA means an accused person can face trial for the same charges in the future, if the prosecution decides to reinstate them.

The latest court decision ended a trial which had spanned three years and ten months involving 99 witnesses, and which had established a prima facie case with Zahid having entered his defence. - Edge 10 September 2023.
