Ismail Sabri

Ismail Sabri is Malaysia's shortest serving prime minister to date

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who has been in office since Aug 21 last year, has become the shortest-serving Malaysia's prime minister, following the announcement of Parliament dissolution today.

The Bera Member of Parliament (MP) was the country's ninth prime minister for one year and 51 days after he took oath to office.

The second shortest-serving prime minister is Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who was in office for one year and 169 days.

The Pagoh MP was appointed as the country's eighth prime minister on March 1, 2020, before his resignation on Aug 16, 2021.

Muhyiddin, who is also Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, resigned as the prime minister after failing to muster majority support of the MPs after 15 Umno MPs withdrew their support for PN.

Langkawi MP Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the third shortest-serving prime minister for one year and 291 days.

He was in office from May 10, 2018 to Feb 24, 2020, as the country's seventh prime minister.

Dr Mahathir, however, had served as the country's prime minister twice. He was first appointed to office on July 16, 1981, before he stepped down on Oct 30, 2003.

He was in the office for 22 years and 107 days, making him the longest serving prime minister of the nation.

In his second stint, Dr Mahathir also became the oldest Prime Minister not in only Malaysia but also globally. - NST
